EASY MONEY...

Even in a real estate market that is slow (but looks like it is picking up), I still get the comment from people saying "You must make a lot of money in real estate. All you realtors do, is open a door, and you get a check for $30k."  Now I know all the realtors reading this are having a good laugh on this one, for we all know this is NOT how it works.  Far from it.  There is so much behind the scenes work, that always goes unnoticed.  Obviously the people who say this, have no idea about this field at all.  How do you usually handle this comment?

My responds is usually, if it were that easy everyone would be doing it.

The public also thinks if you are a million dollar producer, you made a million dollars!  How funny, you can be a million dollar producer and qualify for welfare!

Everybody thinks its easy...till they try it!

Sometimes I respond with "There's a lot more to selling a home than opening a door.  You should spend a week with me to see what real estate is really like."  Then there are some times I don't even respond.

I have a couple of friends who got into real estate a while back.  Needless to say, they are no longer in the business because they found it way too stressful!

I try and show my clients value added service so they understand what we do . . .

I am thinking about breaking down the costs of marketing.  Paper, Internet, Etc. and show them what it costs to try to sell a house...reminding them they are out nothing if the house doesn't sell (but we are, so we try real hard).  I think they are getting a pretty good deal, they have little finance risk in marketing the house if it doesn't sell.  Remember the agent puts up the funds to market and the seller pays nothing!  Mention your family, that's who you work for.  This is a job not an easy money making scheme, it takes money to make money.

I typically rattle back a quick breakdown on how commissions get chopped up four ways, mention that we are self-employed and on top off all our business related expenses for advertising, dues and so on we also have to pay our own medical insurance, 15.3% Self employment tax and never see paid vacation or holidays.

Valerie as a Loan Officer I am not usually faced with that question, but anyone who has ever tried to sell a house quickly finds out that there are a lot of (i's) to dot and (t's) to cross, and soon realizes that maybe the pay is not high enough :)

Pam... You're right.. no matter what you say, they will believe that we make easily $20k per home sold.

Mary.. Amen on that one.  If you are produce a million, you get a million.. how silly is that?  They tell me, if we make 100% on each home, where do the sellers get their money from?

Laura.. That's why I always say, "If it were so easy, everyone would be a Realtor", and your right, they find out it isn't that easy once they get into the field.

Laura K... It is a stressful job.  Real estate is like any other position, you need to work *HARD* to get a head.

Sharon... Very good approach.

Dan.. When you tell them this.. do they then wonder why you remain this this field?

George.  You get paid in this job?  Hmm.  Didn't know that. Oh yea.. the unsteady pay check... get one every now and then... that thing. I remember now.

LOL if only people knew how much it takes from beginning to end and then it doesn't really end, it tapers off, lol

Winston... If only people saw the aftermath.. once everything is split, taxes are removed.. they would actually laugh, and ask why we work for so little.
