Looking for something to do on Columbus Day.. when your children are off from school?

How about Lyman Orchards Presidential Corn Maze! This opened up on  September 5 and will continue through November 1, 2009.

This is the 10th annual corn maze, and one that should not be missed.  This is held on one of America's (needless to say Connecticut's too) oldest family-owned farms.

This season marks the 10th Maze Anniversary for Lyman Orchard's Mazes, and they have made it a very special one. With the presidential election last year and with it's historic landmark, they are honoring the present and the past with this maze.  Brett Herbst, the Guiness World Record holder for maze designing took on this challenge by carving both George Washington and Barack Obama in the maze.

Not only are they honoring our country's Commanders-In-Chief this year, but they are also acknowledging the committment the American people have to the democratic process.  At this point, I would also like to thank the military for their committment too.. if it weren't for our service men and women, we would not have this opportunity.

Admission to the maze this year is $9.00 for ages 13 and older; $5.00 for ages 4 through 12; and admission is free for children 3 and under. The same price as last year.

Yes, it is September and the leaves are beginning to change.. but with this also comes time for one of my favorite activities in the fall... yes, apple picking.  One of the best places in the area, with one of the largest selections is Lyman Orchards in Middlefield, CT

I went this past weekend just to pick a few apples with my sons Jakob and Kyle... you know, just a few to make an Applecake (completely from scratch), and some for the boys lunches for school.  My favorite apples are the Cortland.  Well, in now time we picked a lot more than anticipated... but you know the saying "An apple a day keeps the doctor away".  Well, we won't be seeing him for months at this point. :).. I guess you could say I went a little overboard.. not really.  I've given some to people in my office, and have the rest in a basket on my diningroom table.

I love the smell of fall... hope all of you enjoy this time of year too.

Lyman's 37th Annual Winterfest!

Sat. & Sun., Feb. 21 & 22, 2009

If you are looking for something fun to do this coming weekend with your children (or by yourself) you should head over to Lyman Orchards.  I've posted events in the past happening at Lyman Orchards, but now is the time to Celebrate Winter Fun!  Bill Covitz who is internationally renowned as an ice carver and is a former national champion will be there. Also there will be snow-making experts, so if there isn't any around this weekend.. there will be now.  Ski Sundown, one of Connecticut's premier family skiing facilities, will be partnering with Lyman Orchard's this year in presenting a fun-packed weekend!

I can't think of anywhere else in Connecticut will you find magnificent ice artistry, high-flying aerial stunts on skis and snowboards, lovable Siberian Husky Dogs, and Lyman's great food.

Indoor and outdoor activites also include all the free food samples you can eat, a Sculptures, horsedrawn wagon rides, sled dog mushing demos, and much more!

There is also going to be a Rail Jam Exhibition this year which is sponsored by Ski Sundown. I have no idea what this is.. but I'm sure will be well worth the trip.  Lyman Orchard's has never let me down yet. 

 Here are some of the Winterfest Weekend Events being Scheduled. 

Country Breakfast in the Apple Barrel (Farmer's Market) Saturday and Sunday from 9:00am to noon.

Free Samples of all you can eat.. Saturday and Sunday from 10:00am to 6:00pm

"Under the Seas" Snow & Ice Sculpture Show & Demo
Sat: 10am - 7pm; Sun: 10am - 6pm
Watch Bill Covitz and his team of carvers transform 10,000 pounds of ice into a Winter Wonderland Under the Sea!  Lyman Orchard's is staying open later than normal so you can see this in the dark

Horse-Drawn Wagon Rides, Sled Dog Mushing Demos are also scheduled.  My sons LOVE Huskies.. so I am sure I will know where they will be.

Looking for something to do this weekend with the family?

There is something always going on at Lyman Orchard's.  This is a great time to pick apples for all those apple pies.  What I want to bring to your attention is that Lyman Orchards' popular corn maze is open. Every year it is a different design. This year the maze is the shape of a ladybug.  It opens on opens Saturday (today). Can you imagine what it must look like if you flew over it? 

The admission is $9 for age 13 and older and $5 for ages 4 through 12. Admission is free for children 3 and under. A portion of the proceeds benefits the American Cancer Society. Information: 860-349-1793 or www.lymanorchards.com.

Once again it is time for family fun.  Last month I went with my sons to pick strawberries at Lyman Orchards.  It is now time for the picking of raspberries and blueberries, or should I say eat them.  I think for every one my son will pick (that makes it into the container) two will go into his mouth.  I wonder where he picked that up from?

One of the best places to pick these berries in Connecticut is at Lyman Orchards in Middlefield at the junction of Route 147 and 157.  I have been going to this place for years, for pumpkin picking, apple picking, along with peaches and pears.  Did you know that Lyman Orchards is the 9th oldest farm in the US, and is on 1,100 acres.. and it's own golf course?

If you go, you should try to make a day out of it.  You can even visit the Apple Barrel (Farmer's Market) at the end of your picking for a bottle of apple cider.. or their famous Apple Cider Donuts.

So, if you are in the area, or are looking for something to do with the family when you are in Connecticut, I would suggest to stop by.
