During the course of the year I try to be aware of our environment. I recycle all my cans, glass & newspapers and when I'm (or my two sons) are not in a room, we don't leave the lights on, we make sure it is off. I know I can probably do more, but I feel like I am at least doing something.
So when I heard about Earth Day 2008, I took part. At 7:30pm, yes 1/2 hour early, I not only turned off the lights, but I turned off all the circuit breakers. Everything was turned off, except for the water heater and heat itself. It was cold that night here in Cromwell, CT and I thought it would take more energy to heat up the home again, verses keeping it going on low.
Next my youngest son, who is 9 years old, and I went out for dinner. (My oldest son was with this dad for the weekend) Instead of going to the car and driving somewhere, we opted to walk...still trying to save some energy. So we walked to Dairy Queen. We spent over two hours, just the two of us talking. On the walk back home, we checked out all the stars, and had the best time ever. I thought it was just me, but my son also mentioined that he had a good time. He wanted to do it again. I thought this was just an impluse thought on his end.
Yesterday evening my younger son and I were home again, just the two of us. He remembered the walk, and the time we had before and that he wanted to do it again.... AND WE DID. It is bringing us closer together.
Every time when my oldest son is not home now, we are planning on doing this, spending some of our time together walking and talking.
So, not only did I help save some engery on Saturday, March 29th, I started a new tradition with my son... which is pricesless.
