Recently I had a closing. My clients were wonderful to work with, it just too 6 months to find them a house that they fell in love with. I took them all over... not that I am complaining.. after all this is our job, right? The home they finally choose was worth the wait.. it is gorgeous.
So here is my plight. At the closing I'm handed my commission check and it is for more than what it should be. For a split second I questioned myself as to whether I was right or not. But the commission was set at 5%, not the 6% that this check was for.
A part of me wanted to keep it for all the driving I did... but I knew that was wrong. I brought this to the attention of the attorneys at the closing and the listing agent. They were thankful I found this error, and they reissued the check to me. The way I look at it is that if I had not brought it to someones attention, it would have caught up with me anyway down the pike. If not, I couldn't live with myself knowing I took money that wasn't rightfully mine.
Have you ever been in this situation? If so, or if not... what would you have done?
