MY CAIRN TERRIER...RUSTY

In ActiveRain when you blog and comment about different issues you get to know other members.. Which at this point, if you have been a member for a while, this isn't anything new.  But it has been brought to my attention that we also need to blog about our extended families.. our pets.

Teresa Harris blogged about her Westie, Scooter Boo earlier this week, and I mentioned to her that I had a Cairn Terrier; which is the cousin to the Westie.  I told her about how I got him, and she said I needed to blog about it, to make people aware of the cruelty that can help to pets if you let them.. so here I go.

I grew up with a Cairn Terrier, Meghan Skye McGreggor.  When she past away at the age of 14, I wanted to get another, but female Cairn Terriers are either too expensive (for they are breeders) or they just can't be found. So, I figured I would get a male.. and went to see about finding one that needed a home.

One day I received a call from a woman who would not give me her name, just that she had a 9 month old male Cairn Terrier, and would I want him?  I wanted to know about his background and she told me he is a pure bred.  I asked if she was the breeder, but she said no, she works for one.  I asked how much she wanted for the dog, and she replied nothing, she just wanted him to have a good home.  She told me he was EXTREMELY hyper.  This tends to be the case initially  until they grow up.  I told her that I would take the dog and we met one afternoon.

When I saw the dog, I fell in love instantly; he was bright red and a personality to match.  This woman told me that he had been to 4 homes in 4 weeks, and no one wanted him.  He was just to hyper and went crazy around children.  I was then hesitant, but felt I could work with him.  I asked why she was "giving" him away.  She was reserved, and took a moment, but told me that the breeder she works for was going to drown him, he wasn't "show" material.  His tail did NOT have a black tip, and his front paws did NOT turn in slightly.  When I heard this, there was NO WAY this dog was going to another home, or be drowned.

I worked with him for 4 months, and soon he claimed down, and became the second best Cairn Terrier I've ever had.

There is no need to drown dogs, just because they don't meet "RULES and STANDARDS"... there is always a home that would be glad to take them. Let's help these furry friends of ours, and make people aware of what can happen to them.

Here are some pictures of Rusty today.  He is now 14 years old, and has changed color.  He used to be red, but is now a wheat color.  Sad to say, he is now blind, and is loosing his hearing, but there is no way I'll be drowning him because of it... he has a home for life.
